Our Slate World Lisbon team invite Black Artists to join the virtual gatherings to connect learn and share during this time.
This conversation between Slate World Lisbon Enabler, Alesa Herero, and the artists Di Candido (Didi) and Rodrigo Ribeiro Saturnino is an opportunity to get to know their work and to discuss how Black artists are dealing with quarantine.
Rodrigo Ribeiro Saturnino is a Digital Sociologist; Post-Doc Researcher in Communication at the Communication and Society Research Centre of the University of Minho; (CECS-UMINHO); PhD in Sociology, specialist in Sociology of Communication, Culture and Lifestyle by Institute of Social Science of University of Lisbon (ICS-Lisboa). As member of Djass – Afrodescendants Association in Lisbon, he has promoted debates and activities related to the topic of queer blackness in Portugal. He has also collaborated as a graphic designer to help some projects focused on Blackness (Festa Bee, Projeto Morar - Anti-racist Street Movement and Nneka - Virtual Mother Support Office).
He is also developing an artistic project about illustration and painting where he explores the idea of homoerotic and pleasure as activism key to help to reorganise some ideas about Black masculinity.
Di Candido, Brazilian, based in Lisbon, fellow reasearch in Comunication, Culture and Techologic at ISCTE-IUL, specialist in legal and business consulting to public institutions, startups,indepedent art/culture collectives and creative industry in general, with experience in academic and cultural/media projects, global collectives and curation in communication agencies, film, art and music festivais in Brazil, Portugal, UK and United States.
Executive Producer and Advisor along the funding strategy linked to the planningand implementation of the 7th Biennial Afroeuropeans Network Conference project, held in lisbon last year with a dinamic artiststic and cultural program, connecting a lot of academics, activitcs and artists from the african diaspora around the world.
Di Candido is also the host/dj of House of Didi and Bee. Project, celebrating Black Queer Magic, Immigrant and dissident bodies into the sense of parties, arts and culture in Lisbon and he has been connecting and promoting Black culture artists and collectives (Batekoo Brazil, Afrobapho, Bixas Pretas BR, Lafon Party, Afropunk UK).
Di and Rodrigo are working together to develop a special digital platform to map Black queer artists, makers and collectives to promove blackness queer culture in diaspora from Portugal and across Europe.
Slate World is transnational partnership promoting the visibility and mobility of Black artists across Europe. Led by Eclipse Theatre with partners Theater De Meervaart, ICK Amsterdam and Teatro GRIOT, the two-year programme will open-up new potentials in programming, audience development, digitisation and cultural exchange. We are now in our final year.
